Galax is an independent city in the southwestern part of the Commonwealth of Virginia. It is bounded to the east by Carroll County and to the west by Grayson County, and is served by US Highways 58/221 and 52 along with Virginia 89. It is 82 miles southwest of Roanoke and 68 miles northwest of Winston-Salem, NC.

Area golf courses include the 18-hole Longview Golf Course, the Galax Municipal Golf Course, the 18-hole Blue Ridge Country Club and the Deer Creek Golf Course.
