Galax Virginia & Carroll County Area History

Galax is on the National Register of Historic Places
and has been designated a Virginia Historic Landmark

This region of southwest Virginia was populated by settlers from Scotland, England, Wales and Ireland, who brought with them a profound love for music. Their fiddles, folk songs, ballads and individualism were well suited to life in the rugged mountains, and set the stage for folk, old time and bluegrass music.

In fact, many folklorists believe that this area is richer in more traditional music than any other in the United States.

In the early 1900s, what would later become Galax sprung up along the banks of Chestnut Creek. Known by several different names over the years, the village was on the boundary line of Grayson and Carroll counties.

When the railroad later came into town, the town's name became Galax, which revolved around the harvesting and shipping of the glossy Galax leaves that grow in the area and continue to be used in floral arrangements to this day. Furniture and mirror industries were also born here around the same time.
